About The College of Health Science
At a meeting of the University of Abuja Senate on the 25th October, 2004 chaired by Professor N. O.Yaqup, the visionary incumbent Vice Chancellor at the time gave approval to commence four new academic programs for the University viz Faculty of Health Sciences and the Faculties of Engineering, Veterinary Medicine and Agriculture respectively. In October 2005, the University appointed Professor J.A.M Otubu as the foundation Dean of the Faculty and latter redesignated as foundation Provost of the College of Health Sciences when the Faculty was changed to a Collegiate System. The then Deputy Provost, Professor S.A. Asala succeeded Professor J.A. M Otubu as Acting Provost. He was in this capacity (2010-2014) when the College assembly appointed him as Provost in (2014-2016). Professor Kareem Airede, became the third Provost of the College from 2016-2018. The incumbent was elected into the office of Provost in 2018 by the College Assembly. The first set of Medical Students of the University were admitted in the 2005/2006 academic session. The College went through turbulent time to get approval from Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) and National University Commission (NUC). However, the first set of Medical Doctors were inducted on the 2nd of December 2017 after 12 years on medical education. University of Abuja Teaching Hospital Gwagwalada was approved as the Teaching Hospital arm of the University by President Olusegun Obasanjo. The University has memorandum of understanding with the National Hospital, Abuja to complement the teaching, research and services of the University. Despite the over one decade of its existence, the College like the entire University of Abuja has suffered underdevelopment especially inadequate infrastructure and manpower. Moreover, the Medical School “Collegiate Status” still awaits Nigeria’s senate approval and presidential assent to function as an autonomous body.
